The Next Tuesday Podcast

Jul 4, 2017

What were YOU doing high school?  Crying in your floor to Taylor Swift lyrics? Obsessing over your homecoming date? Freaking out about the PSATs? How about hiring lawyers and starting a legitimate nonprofit organization, which has since hosted thousands of birthday parties for children?

Yeah, Care and Suz didn’t quite make that last one happen.  But Julia Warren, the founder (and now full-time employee!) of Celebrate! RVA sure did.

Julia started celebrate! RVA, a nonprofit dedicated to one single thing: celebrating children and giving joy where it has been lost.

Julia literally leaves the girls speechless with her selfless dedication, clarity, and wisdom far beyond her twenty one years of age.  And while birthday parties are all fun and games, Julia quickly tackles the hard stuff.  She speaks about the roots of distrust between Richmond’s housing projects and the Richmond Police Department, lends a lens to children’s perceptions of how the RPD views them, and how birthday parties are actively helping to change that. Julia’s story isn’t one of a 16 year old with a white savior complex-- it’s the story of a child helping other children feel special, and somewhere along the line growing into an adult cultivating love, joy, and a magical space for children to just be children.

Also: Ugly crying, basic searching on Google, and TURNING 30! Happy Birthday, Suz!!
